SUNDAY NIGHT MYSTERIES

SUNDAY NIGHT MYSTERIESOur Hallowe’en Scare-a-thon continues all month as we hear the cream of the crop of mysteries and spook shows – some for the first time ever – both from the Archive and important people to the world of Radio Drama.

SUSPENSE – Hear many hand picked shows from the legendary series that aired for 20 years on CBS Radio – including a major audio upgrade to Vincent Price and Ida Lupino’s appearance in “Fugue in C Minor. “This is an eerie story of a widowed man who has built a huge pipe organ in his home and his kids think he murdered the mom and hid her in the pipes.

The HERMIT’S CAVE originated on Detroit’s WJR, before moving to the west coast.  The Hermit was one of the most evil sounding hosts.  He narrates “Hanson’s Ghost” and others from 1944.

We’ll also hear many episodes of INNER SANCTUM, the legendary spook show with a host who makes bad puns.  The original host, Raymond Edward Johnson (who passed away many years ago) was a frequent guest at the Friends of Old-Time Radio conventions in NJ (attended every year by your Sunday Night Mysteries host).

LIGHTS OUT (EVERYBODY):  We are featuring many episodes of various versions of this legendary series, including the very first episode.  No copies exist (except in script form).   It has however, just been recreated this year by a group of professional voice actors.  They are known as Project Audion.  WHFR has been given permission to re-broadcast their production of “Burial Services”, not heard since 1936.  When first broadcast, NBC received so many complaints that it was never aired again…until now (Don’t worry, it’s tame by todays standards!).  Dim the lights and tune in if you dare.

WHFR’S SUNDAY NGHT MYSTERIES comes your way (surprise!) Sunday nights from 9:00pm - midnight for three solid hours… stream on whfr.fm or listen at 89.3 on your FM dial in the Dearborn-Detroit area.

Scott Boatright Returns With "Cold Radio Fusion"!

Cold Radio FusionHello everyone. I first started my WHFR radio career in the spring of '98. A world of musical and personal possibilities was opened to me. Since then, I have been a DJ for many shows, Head Music Director, Promotions Coordinator, and organized and planned many fundraiser events for the station. I have left and come back for various reasons, including Covid, and now I am excited to be back.

I have decided to go back to the beginning. Before I landed my own first show, I filled in on several different shows that explored different genres of music, sometimes not adequately represented at the station. My new show, Cold Radio Fusion, airing Tuesdays from 10:00pm - midnight, does exactly that. Each week of the month, I will be showcasing a different scheduled genre of music, some that are genres within a genre, including:

  • 1st Tuesday of the month: Metal, in most of its forms
  • 2nd Tuesday of the month: Jazz with mostly Metal/Rock Fusion influences
  • 3rd Tuesday of the month: Goth/Industrial/Dark Electronic
  • 4th Tuesday of the month: Stoner/Doom/Sludge-Rock
  • The occasional 5th Tuesday of the month: Punk/Garage/Ska

I enjoy them all, and I hope that you will join me in listening to some of the endless possibilities of great music we present here at WHFR.

Check me out every Tuesday evening from 10:00pm - midnight on the Cold Radio Fusion show.
-Scott Boatright.

Seeing Sounds And Hearing Colors: It's Another WHFR Theme Week

WHFR PRESENTSA vivid spectrum of colorful sounds will travel the airwaves as WHFR Radio presents another theme week, this time celebrating fall colors. The landscape of Michigan bursts with colors every October and the programming at WHFR will try to match that intensity with a spectrum of colors of their own.

Tune in during the week of Sunday, October 13, through Saturday, October 19, as the WHFR hosts and hostesses explore the spectrum of colors through the medium of their particular musical genres. All colors of the spectrum are fair game as our programming will seek out colorful music that may be found in a song title, album title, artist/band name or even a record label. The end result should be a kaleidoscopic rainbow of musical tunes for your visual and aural pleasure.

That's Sunday, beginning at 10:00am with Terence Tyson's Play It By Ear jazz show, through Saturday night's Blues With A Feeling from 8:00-10:00pm with Anderson Coleman. We hope you will enjoy the special programming.

BTW, I credit the improvising group Spontaneous Music Ensemble for inspiring such a cosmic name "Seeing Sounds and Hearing Colours," the name of one of their great pieces of music.
-Pat Frisco, WHFR Program Director

"WHFR PRESENTS" Features Robert Fripp & King Crimson

WHFR PRESENTSIt was 1969 and rock and roll music was witnessing a surge in progressive music, as artists were incorporating influences from a wide range of genres such as jazz, classical, world and avant-garde stylings. At the forefront of this movement was the band King Crimson, led by guitarist and composer Robert Fripp.

The band would go through many personnel changes and approaches to their music but the one thing that was constant was an undying desire to push the boundaries, led by Robeert Fripp. Join me, Pat Frisco, as we explore the music of King Crimson as well as a few of Fripp's other projects on WHFR PRESENTS, Sunday, October 6, from 4-7pm EDT. The music of King Crimson will be featured in live concerts in the Detroit area with the David Cross Band at the Token Lounge on Sunday, October 13, and Adrian Belew's Beat Project at Masonic Temple on Sunday, October 27.
