"WHFR PRESENTS": The Music of the Legendary Strata East Record Label

WHFR PRESENTSThe early '70s was a time when the rock and roll and pop music industry was booming and many jazz artists were turning to jazz/rock fusion. Countless creative jazz musicians, seeking to push the music in new directions, were left out in the cold. Record contracts from major labels and well-paid gigs were scarce for many. In 1969, a plethora of creative musicians were moving to Paris and other European cities where their music was loved and respected.

Here in the States, independent record labels and small venues were struggling to provide for these very talented and forward-thinking musicians. In Detroit, the Strata Gallery and Strata Records came to the forefront in our area. Picking up upon a good thing, New York City artists Charles Tolliver and Stanley Cowell formed the independent STRATA EAST RECORDS in 1971. Their output of over 50 records in the 1970s and into the 80's provided a much-needed outlet for the creative work of many musicians. Records were produced in limited quantities and eventually became hard to find.

Along comes Detroit's MACK AVENUE RECORDS who have reissued much of the STRATA EAST catalog, with over 30 recordings and more to come. MACK AVENUE AND GROOV MARKETING have provided WHFR with the recordings that have been reissued in the catalog thus far. The music of Pharoah Sanders, Stanley Cowell, Charles Tolliver, Clifford Jordan and many others can be heard on these airwaves via Mack Avenue and Strata East recordings.

Tune in this Sunday, April 27, from 4:00 - 7:00pm EDT, as we explore the music from Strata East Records artists on the weekly spotlight program WHFR PRESENTS. This will be part one of the features on Strata East with more to come in the month of May. WHFR radio can be heard locally (Dearborn/Detroit) on 89.3fm and worldwide via the internet at whfr.fm.

WHFR PRESENTS airs every Sunday beginning (usually) at 4:00 pm with a rotating cast of WHFR DJs, taking in-depth looks into the many genres of music that WHFR has to offer. Tune in at 89.3 on the FM dial in Dearborn/Detroit and surrounding communities, or listen anywhere via our online streamer.

32 Out of 40

RadiothonAs WHFR Radio approaches 40 years of on-air broadcasting, I look back at my beginnings here. It was March of 1993, 32 years ago. Man, I've been here 80% of the total time that WHFR has been on the air. As I was preparing for my second show ever, the legendary artist SUN RA passed away. I thought to myself, "Well, I have a large collection of his music, perhaps I can do a four-hour retrospective of his career."

I was given the green light by management and off I went, never to look back.

Four-hour shows became commonplace and over the past 32 years, birthday tributes to important jazz artists, memorials after their passing, in-depth looks into careers and label spotlights have made this ride an extremely worthwhile adventure. WHFR continues to provide a much-needed outlet for creative radio, spotlighting little-heard and local artists on a daily basis. Here's to another 40 years on air!!

WHFR’s Physical Plant Overview

RadiothonIn 2018, Bob Burnham, WHFR’s Production Manager and Chief Engineer brought Radio Vault to WHFR. He also saw a lot of things behind the scenes that needed technical improvement. He began assisting Allen Mazurek, our former teacher and Technical Advisor at the time, before Bob officially became part of the management staff. Since that time, WHFR has made drastic improvements in all areas of our facility.

Those improvements include a new FM antenna, transmitter, audio processor and related equipment. A completely new rack was built for this equipment. This equipment added as much as 10 miles to our FM listening range in all directions and a sound that is comparable to and in some cases exceeds any Detroit area station. Those messages we send you now on your car radio are also but a tiny part of those renovations. We also upgraded our Streaming equipment and just about every piece of equipment the audio travels through from our studios to your ear. Major upgrades to studio computer equipment were also completed as well as new microphones, and studio re-wiring, all of which is on-going.

The costs to accomplish these things have been and continue to be enormous and we’re not done yet! These renovations so far would not have been possible at all without you, our Loyal Listener, and we thank you for your past support. There are, however, even more improvements on the horizon! Your support will help us to continue to grow, Making Even Bigger Waves while enhancing our programming and providing our DJs with the best tools to do so.
