WHFR Journal Special Juneteenth Program - Friday, 6/13/25 at 1pm
Join us on tomorrow's WHFR Journal when we share a fun debrief of Pawchella 2025. We'll also share a special PRX program from the series I SEE YOU on Juneteenth, which originally aired July, 2022. Many view Juneteenth as a celebration for those slaves in Texas who finally received word on June 19th, 1865, that they were free. In 2021, Juneteenth was made a national holiday. Some scholars are now questioning that move. Host Eddie Robinson chats with the woman who was the driving force behind Juneteenth becoming a national holiday, Miss Opal Lee, and more.
PAWCHELLA THANKS!
WHFR thanks our Loyal Listeners for helping to make PAWCHELLA 2025 such a great event this year!
Twenty-one animals were adopted over the weekend thanks to the extra visibility this event brings to Friends for Animals of Metro Detroit.
The two-day, feel-good festival celebrated the joy of animals, community, and second chances. Hosted at the newly expanded MaryAnn Wright Animal Adoption & Education Center, 383 attendees helped PAWCHELLA raise critical funds needed to help care for the nearly 2,500 animals cared for by Friends for Animals each year.
Many thanks to all who made this event a success, and especially to our listeners who stopped up to our WHFR tent to say hello!

WHFR Journal Looks at the Big Picture this Friday at 1pm
On this week’s show, May 30, we’ll celebrate the Detroit Grand Prix with the Big Picture Science episode titled “Vroom”. Self-driving cars, once a thing of science fiction, have become a reality in a handful of cities across the country. As our vehicles gain autonomy, they may provoke a profound shift not unlike the introduction of the first car in the late 1800s.
For a glimpse into the future of self-driving cars, we take a spin through the history of the automobile, from the Model T to the driverless taxicab. Along the way, we explore the rise of American manufacturing and the unmistakable but unexpected way in which we have bonded to our four-wheeled companions.
Join us for this special episode from PRX on the WHFR Journal, Friday, May 30, from 1pm-2pm only on WHFR.
