PIANO GREAT IRENE SCHWEIZER 1941-2024

The great free jazz pianist Irene Schweizer has passed at the age of 83. Known for her brilliant improvisational work, collaborations with many of the great free jazz drummers and involvement in the groundbreaking Feminist Improvising Group, Ms. Schweizer's career spanned from the late 60's to her last concerts in 2019. Irene is also credited as a co-founder of the Intakt Music record label out of Switzerland.

WHFR at Concert of Colors July 20th & 21st

The Concert of Colors is metro Detroit’s free annual diversity-themed music festival. Global music at its finest at this colorful, festive, upbeat coveted summer event. Housed in Culture Source a coalition of 152 arts organizations in Southeast Michigan, the Concert of Colors has become the Midwest’s biggest diversity and arts festival.

Be sure to stop by the WHFR tent, located near the Wolverine Stage, to say hello and pick up some free WHFR swag! We will be on-site:

WHFR Goes Classical Friday, July 19th

Henry Ford College is closed today, Friday, July 19th, which gives our in-studio DJs an unexpected day off. We will be back in the studio tomorrow.
In the meantime, enjoy our Classical 24 programming all day long, and be sure to tune in next week to hear our regularly-scheduled Friday shows!

He calls his book, A power Stronger Than Itself, a look into the rich history of The Association For The Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) originating in Chicago in the mid '60s. Trombonist, Computer Musician, Composer and Educator George Lewis was born in Chicago, July 14, 1952. WHFR PRESENTS will feature his music in a birthday tribute this Sunday, July 14, from 4-7pm EDT.

The House That Jack Swing Built Relocates!

The House That Jack Built is on the move. It's time to find a new home, so we're exploring the WHFR map, venturing into fresh musical territories until we discover the perfect spot.

To refuel, we'll make a brief stop Wednesdays from 10am to 12pm. Then on Thursday, from 10am to 12pm, we'll take a moment to relax our minds, bodies and souls in the Quiet Storm before hitting the road again.

WHFR Journal THIS Friday at 1pm Features Detroit's Concert of Colors Lineup

Tune in to the WHFR Journal this Friday, July 5, at 1pm. Ralph Valdez, Deputy Director of the upcoming Concert of Colors FREE World Music and Diversity Festival will share the latest lineup of what's in store for this action packed 33rd annual event. Check out the Concert of Colors link on our WHFR homepage or concertofcolors.com for more details. As is tradition, WHFR will broadcast live artists from the Wolverine Stage at the DIA July 20 and 21. Enjoy activities for all ages beginning Tuesday, July 16.

WHFR Journal Focuses on Food, Energy, and How They're Connected -- Tune in Tomorrow, June 28 at 1pm

Globally, one-third of food produced every year is wasted. That’s enough to feed about 2 billion people – twice the number of people who are undernourished. The global food system also accounts for a whopping one-third of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. When food is wasted, it’s also a waste of land, water and energy. Join us for the WHFR Journal show on Friday, June 28 at 1pm as we feature a special PRX airing from Climate One that discusses how to fix the broken system from some of the people on the ground recovering food before it goes to waste.

WHFR PRESENTS: The Lion Of Zimbabwe: Thomas Mapfumo

Close out the month of June with Terence Tyson as music will feature the African sounds of Thomas Mapfumo Sunday, June 30 from 4 until 7pm.

Born on July 3, 1945 in a town just southeast from the capital Zimbabwe, Harare, he was raised in rural surroundings until the age of 10. He later got exposed to the traditional music of the Shona that featured mbira and ngoma drums.
