Celebrating Captain Beefheart on "Roll And Tumble Take 2"

He was born Don Van Vliet on January 15, 1941, but became known as Captain Beefheart. His association with Frank Zappa, while in high school, shaped both of those artists careers in many "Bizarre" ways. They shared a love for blues, '50s R&B and jazz. After a series of singles in the mid '60s, the Captain was signed by Zappa for his most well known "masterpiece" Trout Mask Replica.

"WHFR PRESENTS" January 28, 4-8PM EST

Join Bill Keith from 4-6pm as he presents "BACK IN THE DAY," a throwback to college radio past, featuring artists from the '70s and '80s, along with current music by those artists, showing that they are still making relevant music today.

Stay tuned from 6-8pm as Brian Yamstein explores the various renditions of the classic song "Peggy O" on his HISTORY NOTES special, starting with the original Bob Dylan versions and into the various takes on the piece.

Ms. Marjon To Host "WHFR PRESENTS"

Ms. Marjon plays R&B and Classic Soul music (including independent music) from the '70s, '80s, '90s, and 2000s. Her radio shows feature music themes, interviews, special milestone shoutouts, and music requests from the listeners. Tune in to hear Ms. Marjon's host WHFR Presents on Sunday, January 21st, from 4 to 8 PM.

You will hear Suites by Sonny Rollins, Max Roach, Wadada Leo Smith and John Coltrane as well as other bits and pieces concerning equality, freedom, love, etc...

SUN RA RETURNS TO EARTH FOR "WHFR PRESENTS"

Despite losing Sun Ra, in his earthly form, in 1993, his spirit continues to reign over his Earth people and his Arkestra continues to amaze, led by the 99 year old Marshall Allen.

Musicians and listeners of all genres continue to embrace the music and spirit of Sun Ra as witnessed by countless recordings released after his passing to other realms and Marshall Allen continuing the Arkestra legacy.

2023 Year in Review

Ring in 2024 with WHFR! January 1st through 7th, all your favorite WHFR shows will present special programming for our "2023 Year in Review". How will each of our DJs choose to remember the year that was? Winter Season Celebration Programming

All of us here at WHFR wish you the very best during this holiday season. Many of your favorite WHFR personalities will once again gather around the studio this season to record special programs celebrating a variety of holidays that fall into these cold months including Kwanzaa, Chanukah, Christmas, New Year, and other winter holidays. There will be lots of wonderful independent music that you may have never heard before, plus alternative versions of your favorite traditional holiday songs.

We invite you to tune in to this week's WHFR Journal program when we chat with Cory Keller, President of Friends for Animals of Metro Detroit about their services and facilities, and ways to get involved in helping our local furry friends. Also, we'll talk about the beautiful Arab American National Museum with the AANM's Curator of Education and the Arab Film Festival, Dave Serio. Learn how the AANM helps educate our community on the culture and history of the Middle East's traditions and heritage. All this on a powerful edition of the WHFR Journal this Friday at 1pm.
