The Concert of Colors is Here!

Concert of ColorsThe Concert of Colors begins today, and you can join WHFR at a few select events on July 17th!

This Thursday, WHFR will be on-site for two of the four amazing performances happening at the Detroit Historical Museum. From 5:00-8:00pm we will be handing out free WHFR promo items, periodically calling into the studio with live on-air reports, and enjoying the Arab, Armenian, and Eastern jazz sounds of Victor Ghannam & Sean Blackman's Hye Salam featuring David McMurray (performing 5:30-6:15pm) and also the Moroccan-French power quartet Bab L' Bluz (performing 6:45-7:30pm).

Concert of ColorsWe then move over to Third Man Records (doors open at 7:30pm) for a 21st-century experimental chamber musical experience with Nebula Sound Ensemble (performing 8:00-8:40pm) and cosmic soundscapes from Detroit's own Beautiful Noise featuring Kash Killion, Scott Amendola, Ben Goldberg, Don Was, Gretchen Gonzales & Chris Peters (performing 9:00-10:00pm).
And if you can't be there, don't worry! WHFR will be broadcasting these Third Man Records performances on our airwaves; locally at 89.3 on your FM dial and streaming world-wide at www.whfr.fm.

The Concert of Colors takes place July 16-20, and it's all free!

WHFR Journal Friday, 7/11 at 1pm -- Concert of Colors and Getting Back to Nature

Join us Friday, July 11 at 1pm on the WHFR Journal as we talk with renowned Detroit-based global music artist Sean Blackman regarding Concert of Colors, the free global music and diversity festival taking place next week here in Detroit. Sean is serving as Partner Liason for this year's festival and will share details about what we can expect at the five-day event. We'll also air a special episode of the PRX show, Sea Change Radio, to provide tips on being more attentive of your surroundings when in nature and reaping the benefits that follow. Join us at 1pm only on WHFR-FM.

"WHFR PRESENTS": THE MUSIC OF CHESS RECORDS PART TWO

WHFR PRESENTSFrom its origin in 1950 until 1975, CHESS RECORDS set the music world afire with some of the most spirited and most influential music ever to be heard previously. Founded in Chicago by Leonard and Phil Chess, the record label was home to great blues and rhythm and blues music and expanded into the worlds of early rock and roll, jazz and gospel music.

Artists such as Willie Dixon, Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters and Chuck Berry recorded for the label and served as a major influence on upcoming bands and musicians in the rock and roll world such as Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones and the Animals. Their legacy still stands tall today as many new blues artists look these artists and these recordings for their inspiration.

WHFR JournalOn this 4th of July holiday edition of the WHFR Journal, we'll talk about a sense of connection to the community we come from with a PRX special from December of 2024 called "Top of Mind - Community Traditions that Connect Us to Home" It’s the season for nostalgia, so we’re looking at how community traditions help us feel connected to the place we live. Is there a certain holiday, or time of year, when you’ll go out of your way to be in your hometown? The podcast shares stories from around the country of Christmas traditions, Fourth of July festivities, summer music jams and a host of quirky celebrations from small town America. Also, we'll talk about the dreaded pest the tick and your host shares her story of contact with this nasty bug and how to avoid getting bitten. SPIRITS REJOICE SAYS HAPPY CANADA DAY

SPIRITS REJOICE It's a well known fact today that jazz and improvised music is not strictly an American thing. While it was born and raised in the USA, artists from the world over have made significant contributions to the music. Canada is no exception.

On this day, July 1, we honor our friends to the north by observing Canada Day. The Spirits Rejoice Program, heard Tuesdays from 6-10pm EDT, will feature many of the great Canadian improvising artists past and present. Tonight's program will also feature music from American drummer Rashied Ali on this the date of his birth as well as many new recordings into the libraries here at WHFR.

Spirits Rejoice is a long running program of jazz and improvised musics heard weekly 6-10pn EDT on WHFR Radio, 89.3 locally (Dearborn/Detroit) and worldwide via the internet at whfr.fm.

Join Robbwith2bees as he shines a spotlight on the "bleeps and bloops" that The 8bitpeoples have released over the last 26 years, spanning a massive library of 140 releases and counting!

In PART ONE of WHFR Presents: The Music of 8bitpeoples, airing June 29th from 4-7pm EDT, our focus will be on the music of 8bitpeoples' two founders: Jeremiah Johnson (aka Nullsleep) and Detroit native Mike Hanlon (aka Tangible/Mesu Kasumai).
