Legendary jazz drummers ART BLAKEY and BILLY HIGGINS share a birthday and a love for jazz rhythms. Blakey would begin a career in the late 1940's and perform with Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk and others before forming the JAZZ MESSENGERS which he co-led initially with pianist Horace Silver.
BILLY HIGGINS would be the go to jazz drummer for many of the greats beginning in the 1960's and enjoy a career that had him driving the bands led by Jaki Byard, Herbie Hancock, Ornette Coleman and many others...

Join us tomorrow, Friday, October 9 at 1pm as we chat with HFC Student Meetta Martin about her fundraising project called the "Stars of Tomorrow HFC Student Showcase" taking place on our HFC campus on Nov. 9. This showcase features music, poetry, dance, theatre and more and is a fundraiser for the Salvation Army Angel Tree Program. Learn how you can participate, support our students, and help out a wonderful cause at the same time.

The great bassist was known for his years performing with Oscar Peterson and Ella Fitzgerald, who he was married to for a few years. Ray also performed with many artists outside of Jazz including Aretha Franklin, Steely Dan, Maria Muldaur and Elvis Costello. It only had a mostly limited CBS distribution on the west coast (except for a limited run in Chicago). You'll hear a sample of all of the above including a rare show that was located only this past summer (and hasn't been heard since). A new space telescope will soon give us an expanded field of view of some of the strangest phenomena in the cosmos. JOHN COLTRANE AT 100
His music set not only the jazz world but the entire music community around the world afire. By the time of his passing in 1967, music fans from across the globe were hip to the music of JOHN COLTRANE. Mr. Coltrane was born September 23, 1926, a year that would welcome the births of eventual jazz greats such as Miles Davis and Randy Weston as well. Coltrane took the music of the bebop era and spent a tireless career expanding the language of music, incorporating musical influences from around the world and developing an unmatched approach to his unique style.
