25 YEARS!--Happy Birthday WHFR!

WHFR-FM began regular broadcasting on Dec. 20, 1985. Now streaming on the internet, accessible to computers and smartphones everywhere, with many shows archived regularly to our website, WHFR is a miracle of local involvement, initiative, and service.

I remember that first day at the transmitter atop the Liberal Arts Building at HFCC when we flipped the switch on: just as snowy and cold as today--but we could feel the excitement beginning. Thanks to all our loyal listeners and community supporters along the way!

Spirit Artist -Kim Bailey- featured on "Metaphysically Speaking" 1-2pm Tuesday, December 21st

Mike's next guest on "Metaphysically Speaking" is Spirit Artist, Kim Bailey. Kim is a visually and spiritually gifted artist who paints the essence of the energy that she senses around a persons body and soul. Through a meditation process, she connects with her spirit guides and they lead her to draw an abstract image that represents your spirit. Kim will intuitively draw and design something she "feels", using a variety of colors, which helps to convey messages that she receives about someone.

A note from host Pat Frisco, "Tis the Tuesday before Christmas and I stare at the same old music for the holidays. I think that I have an idea for a better Christmas present. The master-mind that we knew as Frank Zappa was born on this date, December 21, 1940. He would have been 70 and I'm certain that he would still be delighting, confusing, and amazing us if we were still with us today. Let's celebrate Christmas and Zappa's birthday with four hours of his music, Tuesday December 21 on the Spirits Rejoice program from 6-10pm.

Hailing from Beaverton, Michigan, singer/songwriter Brandon Calhoon has traveled from coast to coast entrancing audiences with his passionate lyrics and soulful blues-inspired songs.

As a live entertainer, his popularity has grown since his initial introduction on the television show Rockstar INXS. And has continued to rise after his 2009 EP release “Detroit City” (Blunk Brothers). Since then he has continued to write and create music that shines from his soul.

Pianist and innovator Matthew Shipp came to New York City as a 23 year old in 1984 and quickly emerged as one of the most powerful and unique voices on the music scene. His associations with William Parker, David S. Ware, Roscoe Mitchell and Rob Brown helped Matthew to realize his vision in music. Shipp was born on December 7, 1960 and will celebrate his 50th birthday as the Spirits Rejoice program airs from 6-10pm. Tune in on Tuesday the 7th as we weave in and out of the music of Matthew Shipp to say Happy Birthday.
