WHFR Journal - Tomorrow at 1pm -Theatre, Heart Gallery, and Self Care

“WHFR PRESENTS” Afrobeat Artist and Activist Fela Kuti
On Sunday September 15 from 4-7pm EDT, WHFR's Terence Tyson will honor the music and life of Afrobeat artist and activist Fela Kuti. Born October 15, 1938 in Abeokuta British Nigeria, Fela captured the ears and minds of a worldwide audience through his innovative music and activism regarding social and political strife in his native land.
He is considered the originator of Afrobeat Music, combining West African music with salsa, calypso and traditional sounds with American funk and jazz. Fela was known for his extraordinary work as a songwriter, vocalist, saxophonist, keyboard player as well as other instruments.
Emerging on the 1970's, Fela's music was critical of the military dictatorship of his land and was responsible for helping create a republic independent from the military rule. He became a target of the government and was often beaten and once jailed for 20 months. His music and message exploded In the late 70's and into the 80's when he was signed to Arista Records. Fela died at the age of 58 in Lagos Nigeria. His legacy continues to this day.

Heather Pierson on Light From the Underground
Light From the Underground will feature a special interview with singer songwriter Heather Pierson. The New Hampshire based singer songwriter is touring in support of her latest album, Back to the Light. The new album adds a New Orleans Jazz sound to her musical exploration. She'll be in the Detroit area on Saturday, Sept. 21, when she performs at Mama's Coffee House at Birmingham Unitarian Church. The concert is at 7:30 p.m. Listen Saturday Sept. 14, at 11:00 a.m. for the interview and a chance to win a pair of tickets.

“WHFR PRESENTS” Remembers Avant-Jazz Greats Marion Brown & Phillip Wilson
On Sunday, September 8, from 4-7pm EDT, WHFR Radio will remember two of the great musicians of the avant-garde in jazz, alto saxophonist Marion Brown and drummer Phillip Wilson. Both were born on September 8, Brown (1931-2010) and Wilson (1941-1992).
Marion Brown, from Atlanta, burst upon the scene in New York City in the mid 60's, performing with John Coltrane (Ascension) and Archie Shepp as well as recording many records for the Legendary ESP-Disk label, ECM Records and many others.
Phillip Wilson, from St. Louis, lived In Chicago in the mid 60's, performing with Roscoe Mitchell's Art Ensemble and joined the Paul Butterfield Blues Band in the late 60's, appearing at the Woodstock Music Festival. Wilson went on to New York City, performing with Anthony Braxton, Julius Hemphill and Frank Lowe as well as leading his own groups.

Join us for this week's The WHFR Journal as we welcome new Dearborn Area Chamber of Commerce President Kelli Vanden Bosch. Kelli will share info on the upcoming "Meet the Candidates" event that the Chamber is hosting on September 19th and more. Also, we'll wrap up HFC President Russ Kavalhuna's informative State of the College Address from last weeks show. We'll finish the hour with a special PRX program entitled "The Urgent Need to Rethink Suicide: Lessons for Veterans and All Americans" to shine a light on this tragic reality as Suicide Prevention Month begins. WHFR Journal Returns August 30th
The WHFR Journal, our local campus and community news and views program, is back from late summer hiatus. Join us today at 1pm as we celebrate the return of students to Henry Ford College's campus for the FA'24 term. We'll chat with HFC Theater Director Dr. John Michael Sefell about a collaborative event with the arts areas on campus called HFC 24. Also, we'll hear an encore presentation of HFC President Russ Kavalhuna's State of the College address that he delivered live to our campus community last Tuesday. Tune in at 1pm on the WHFR Journal.
WHFR DJ Receives Inaugural “Making Waves” Award
Long-time WHFR-FM (89.3 FM) DJ Joe Sullivan is the recipient of the inaugural “Making Waves” award for his many years of service at WHFR, HFC’s student-run, non-commercial, independent radio and internet broadcasting station.
“It’s a nice feeling,” recalled Sullivan, of Dearborn. “This was totally out of the blue. I didn’t know I won it until it was announced. It was a well-kept secret around here. All of us were at a WHFR staff meeting when (WHFR general manager) Susan McGraw announced it.”
“Joe’s passion for music, unwavering dedication, and boundless generosity have left an indelible mark on our community,” said McGraw. “Beyond the airwaves, Joe’s love of broadcasting and WHFR knows no bounds. WHFR SPECIAL SHOWS LABOR DAY WEEKEND
Tune in to WHFR RADIO for special programming especially for the Labor Day Weekend. The themes of labor, unions and worker rights will be celebrated with song selections on various WHFR radio shows.
Shows such as Light from the Underground, La Dolce Voce, Play it By Ear, Hotwax Radio, Roll and Tumble and others will feature songs dealing with work related themes that will make all of us happy that we can enjoy 40 hour weeks and paid vacations.
Start Your Labor Day Weekend Early with “Theme Attic” and Host Phil Maq!!!
Labor Day Weekend is the last unofficial weekend of the Summer. It is filled with so many options that someone could drive themselves crazy trying to figure out how to squeeze in all of the festivals, traveling, Bar-B-Qs, and socializing. Theme Attic, a musical variety show hosted by Phil Maq that's loosely based on subjects, is heard on Wednesdays from 12PM-4PM EDT, and will touch on some of those as well as celebrating the reason for the Holiday by featuring some songs about work, and, well, uh, labor!
You may even hear some of those same themes recurring on other shows on WHFR for the next week!
But get your week started early by kicking it off on Wednesday's Theme Attic with Phil Maq from 12PM-4PM EDT!!!
