WHFR is pleased to feature a new WHFR DJ Spotlight Series for our home page so our DJs can stay connected with you while we're temporarily away from the Studio A chair. You might find music reviews, suggestions for staying active, backstories about how we got into the radio business, and some nice comments to help us all stay connected. Enjoy!

I have been off the air for personal reasons since Summer of 2019 and I really hoped to be back on the air in early 2020 but COVID-19 happened. That hasn't stopped me from listening to lots and lots of music to get me through 2020 (and the end of 2019). I have discovered music through Bandcamp, record review write ups and just expanding on an artist's catalogue.

Like many of you, sleep has been rough and I have found these artists and albums have help me through some sleepless nights: MAX RICHTER – SLEEP (over 8 hours of music); the WINDY & CARL catalogue including their new release ALLEGIANCE & CONVICTION; HILDUR GUDNADOTTIR (CHERNOBYL soundtrack and SECOND CHILDHOOD with BJ Nilsen & Stilluppsteypa), WILLIAM BASINSKI'S DISINTEGRATION LOOPS, and VALENTINA GONCHOROVA (Ukrainian violin experimentalist). This mix of classical, soundtracks, ambient, and experimental music has made sleep issues almost a thing of the past (almost).

One of the strangest discoveries was from a Facebook Page called “The Same Video of Shaq & His Family Dancing to Various Songs” and you guested it – people post various songs set to same video of Shaq & his family dancing in the kitchen. It was on this page I heard “Sudno (Boris Ryzhy)” by MOLCHAT DOMA. This Belarussian synthpop band has made me excited about some non-soundtrack, classical, ambient music for a change. MOLCHAT DOMA's two releases – ETAZHI and S KRISH NASHIH DOMOV while original released in 2018 & 2017 respectively was just released in the United States early 2020! This lead me to searching out other synth-pop and indie rock from Ukraine, Russia and the surrounding areas (PLOHO, DAKH DAUGHTERS, and GIL'OTINA).

Great article by our Web Guy: Ryan Youngs about the band WEREWOLF JONES:
I listen to music for the way it makes me feel first, and everything else comes second. Perhaps this is why a band named Werewolf Jones caught my attention at a show just before things started to shut down due to the pandemic. Werewolf Jones took the stage as the late act for Saturday night of the Hamtramck Music Festival at Outer Limits. Their sound was awesome! It was fast, it was loud, it was full of fuzz, and reminded me of listening to old hardcore punk tapes decades ago. They are definitely taking cues from the older bands in the genre like Bad Brains, Minor Threat, and fellow Detroit area brethren Negative Approach. As far as sound goes, my first thoughts around instrumentation were pre-hip-hop Beastie Boys as it was so raw and fast, but after a little more thought early Negative Approach might be a little more inline. Vocally, my first thoughts were of Tony Reflex of the Adolescents if he had deeper voice and yelled more, haha. At any rate, if you like hardcore punk music from the early 80's or if you just want to go out and see a rock show that is super high energy but not at a massive venue check these guys out. Since live music shows aren't much of a thing right now, you can find Werewolf Jones music on Spotify, bandcamp.com, and Youtube.com.

Once again Bandcamp is waiving their fees for all purchases made on their site Friday July 3, 2020. This means anything purchased that day, the full purchase amount goes to that artist and/or independent label putting out that release. Many of the artist WHFR supports sell their music on Bandcamp and we even sell our release Motor City Gems on the site. Support independent music and WHFR by making a Bandcamp purchase on Friday July 3rd. Links located below.

Current Public Affairs Programming running Friday June 26 from 11am - 2pm

11am: Big Picture Science - Soap, Skin, Sleep
Some safeguards against COVID-19 don’t require a medical breakthrough. Catching sufficient Z’s makes for a healthy immune system. And, while you wash your hands for the umpteenth time, we'll explain how soap sends viruses down the drain. Plus, your body’s largest organ – skin – is your first line of defense against the pandemic and is also neglected because of it. Find out why we're suffering from "skin hunger" during this crisis.

Guests:

WHFR is still receiving hundreds of new songs and albums each month even during the HFC shut down. In anticipation of the day (we hope soon) we can go back to locally produced live programming, we are loading up our Music Server with lots of great new music. Here are this week's top 5 adds for week ending June 9th:

1) Kyle Avallone – Last Minute Man

2) Pins – Hot Slick

3) The Unfit – The Unfit

4) Ex Norwegian – Hur Spotting

5) Hotel Life – Old School Stereo

WHFR's mission is to play local, independent and music little heard elsewhere on the radio dial. COVID-19 has had a great effect on the musicians just like it has had a great effect on our WHFR broadcasts. While WHFR is not producing local programming, we will keep you posted when HFC will let our DJs back on-the-air, we want to continue to support the musicians we play and fit our mission. Bandcamp is a website that many musicians use to let people stream music, download, and even purchase physical copies of their music. Bandcamp has set up the first Fridays of the month by waiving all of their fees and having all the purchases going to the artist and/or labels. The next Bandcamp fee free day is FRIDAY JUNE 5. Then they will have it again on Friday July 3rd. You can find many of the local and independent artist we play on WHFR via Bandcamp and even WHFR has our Motor City Gems release available on Bandcamp for purchase. After the page break are links to the Support Artists Bandcamp article and a link to our Motor City Gems release.

As we go into the Memorial day weekend, many of us are normally looking forward to a weekend of live electronic music in the heart of Detroit. People come from around the world to see some of the biggest names in EDM at the Movement festival. But not unlike "The Mix" show on WHFR, this year's festival has also been postponed for now. I encourage everyone to take some spare time and go online to the various social media sites and follow your favorite DJ's and mix shows. So many DJs are doing live steams posting downloadable live mixes right now that you are bound to find something from your favorite artists including tons of local content from your favorite DJ's that normally spin on The Mix. "The Mix with Bam radio show" Facebook group is a great place to start your search. Also, don't forget to check out the live streams all weekend long for the "Virtual Movement festival" live at Movement.US Until we can get back live into the mix at WHFR on Thursday nights, stay safe and let the mix continue at home. -BAM

Pat Frisco is the host of the Avant Jazz program SPIRITS REJOICE typical on Tuesdays 7-10pm. Here is a list of new music he has checked out that you should check out too!

Here are some new ones that have come my way over the past couple of months:
-The Russian pianist Simon Nabatov has released 3 new recordings, all of which are unique and are excellent examples of his immense talent. Leo Records has released two of these: and Clean Feed the third one.

Hi. I’m Joe, host of BIG BAND, BROADWAY AND BEYOND typically every Friday 10am to Noon. The music I play on this programs covers at least 100 years of American popular music. I love what I do at WHFR and looking forward to when normal locally produced programming is back on the air. I am anxious for normal living and entertaining WHFR listeners again.

The concept of RADIO VAULT on Tuesdays at 3:00 is not new. The whole approach, however, is somewhat unique. The current incarnation of the show began on WHFR about 3 years ago. Radio Vault is never scripted. The idea, however, is that it is a HOSTED show, meaning we don't just play the old recordings -- we TALK about them -- even if it's just to announce the original broadcast date. Radio Vault is also not a nostalgia show, per se, but we do respect the historical significance, all while using the latest digital technology to make the audio as clear as possible.
