Pat Frisco and SPIRITS REJOICE, the music of creative improvisation in jazz, returns to the airwaves. The music of recently departed music greats Stanley Cowell, Bobby Few and John Russell will be featured along with many new recordings this Tuesday January 26 from 7-10pm. It's a New Dawn, It's a New Day.

To celebrate the end of a year to forget (2020) let's take a look at the end of a good year in music, 1970. From the blues/rock of Johnny Winter and Derek & The Dominoes to the beginnings of jazz/rock fusion with Miles Davis and Soft Machine, it was a good year indeed. Join me (Pat Frisco) for two hours worth on Tuesday January 26 from 5-7pm to listen and enjoy. Forward....Into the Past......

Just checking in to let our great listeners know that we are itching to get back into the station to bring you the great local content we have all enjoyed over the years. As the current situation continues on we will continue to bring you the classical programming that we have been broadcasting but as soon as things change and we can get back in we let you all know as soon as we can. So keep an eye on the website or sign up for the e-newsletter (button is further up the page) to be kept up to date on the latest happenings at the station.

At least according to singer Joe Talbot on numerous occasions. However, there is a reason he has made this declaration on numerous occasions, many outlets and fans often slap genre titles on them like punk, post-punk, post-hardcore, etc. So maybe there is a reason for this. The band's bigger tracks are often up tempo and loud rock tracks with raucous vocals reminiscent of UK street punk outfits like The Exploited (in their early years, think Dead Cities) if they were singing.

This year marks Skrockin' Yer Butow's 30th year on the air, and today’s show will also be its final broadcast… the countdown just started at 6:00PM!

“DEATH TO SKROCKIN’ YER BUTOW” broadcasts 7:00-10:34pm in Dearborn/Detroit at 89.3FM on the radio dial, and to the rest of the world via our webzone: www.whfr.fm

If you plan on listening, I invite you to test WHFR’s streamer now, just to make sure it works.

As has been a longtime WHFR tradition, we are taking a break from the current classical programming for a weeklong on-air celebration of the winter season. Starting at 2pm on Friday, December 18 (after a special end of the year WHFR Journal), we will be programming a “Best of Winter Season Celebration” show. This compilation of shows features our WHFR staff sharing songs and stories about the Celebrations of this winter season: Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, the Winter Solstice, New Year’s, and WHFR’s 35th birthday. There will be a wide variety of formats and DJs playing their favorite Winter Season music throughout the week from the last few years PLUS there a few new shows added in the mix. Tune in to WHFR’s Winter Season Celebration week from Friday afternoon, December 18, until early Saturday, December 26. Happy Holidays from WHFR!

This month marks the 35th anniversary of WHFR's first on-air broadcast, and we’re celebrating this "birthday" during the December 18 edition of the WHFR Journal (with a special start time of 12:50pm), featuring a very special guest: former Station Advisor and founder of WHFR, Jay Korinek. Jay will share details about the station's history and well as some interesting anecdotes about WHFR over the years. He was present for most of the 35 years, and we’re very excited to have him back on the airwaves on the show he created, the WHFR Journal. In the same hour, we’ll also be welcoming esteemed Henry Ford College President Russ Kavalhuna to talk about the HFC year in review and thoughts on what we can look forward to in 2021.

These are the best of the best of WHFR and Henry Ford College, just for you on the WHFR Journal beginning at 12:50pm on Friday, December 18, 2020. Please join us!

The Homelessness Marathon is a unique radio program that gives homeless people and their allies a chance to speak with the nation about their experiences. Broadcasting from a different city each year, the Marathon features live reports, interviews with advocates and experts, and calls from listeners all over the country. Each hour of the program focuses on a different aspect of the problem, from youth to veterans, and from evictions to shelters. Above all, the program centers the voices of homeless people talking about their real circumstances, obstacles, and potential solutions.

WHFR will continue to broadcast Classical 24 on our airwaves for our listener enjoyment. This will remain in place until the campus is opened back and students and WHFR staff are able to return.

Thank you WHFR for your excited for our slow return of locally produced programming with WHFR DJs. We had just began to add more DJs to our schedule when the latest COVID-19 related shutdown was announced. Starting TODAY, Wednesday November 18, Henry Ford College has returned to all remote teaching and work for at least 3 weeks if not until the end of the semester. This means that WHFR will have to return Classical 24 for our programming 24/7 until HFC allows students/faculty and staff back on campus. We knew this was a possibility but we were hoping we would be on the air longer with our few WHFR DJs. We will keep you posted when the slow return to WHFR DJs begins AGAIN. Enjoy Classical 24.
