Special programming is planned for this EASTER SUNDAY as WHFR PRESENTS presents JOHN COLTRANE'S major piece of music ASCENSION. Tune in on EASTER SUNDAY, APRIL 5, from 2-7pm EDT, for a 5-hour foray into this iconic piece of music and others in a similar vein...
Hour one will feature the first edition of ASCENSION with John Coltrane leading a 10-piece ensemble including tenor saxophonists ARCHIE SHEPP and PHAROAH SANDERS. In hour two, the ROVA SAXOPHONE QUARTET, augmented by special guests, will offer up their re-working of the piece. Hour three will feature the work of DOLLAR BRAND (ABDULLAH IBRAHIM) and his large ensemble piece JABULANI EASTER JOIY.
In hour four, we will return to JOHN COLTRANE for the second edition of ASCENSION. The final hour will feature ROVA once again pulling together an electric version, ELECTRIC ASCENSION. To round out each hour of music, there will be selected spiritual jazz recordings which seem appropriate for this Easter Sunday.
