Known as one of the finest composers and improvisers in modern jazz and the avant-garde, Henry Threadgill's career has spanned six decades of music through his work with AIR, THE HENRY THREADGILL SEXTET, VERY VERY CIRCUS, MAKE A MOVE, ZOOID and other groups as a leader and sideman. His work has served to expand the language of this music in a totally individual way...
Whether performing on the alto, tenor or baritone saxophones, clarinet, flute, bass flute or hubkaphone, Henry has incorporated his voice into a variety of unique groupings including the use of tuba and guitar combinations. The cooperative trio AIR, with bassist Fred Hopkins and drummer/percussionist Steve McCall took the music from the basic theme/solos/theme format in jazz into the area of freedom in music through the interplay of three equal parts.
Part one, aired last week, took us through Mr. Threadgill's early works with AIR in the mid to late 70's, works with Muhal Richard Abrams, Roscoe Mitchell, Anthony Braxton and his own early Sextet music. On SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 22, from 4-7pm EST, we will pick it up again in the early 80's with music from the SEXTET, another one or two from AIR and continue forward through the career of this brilliant and prolific artist.
