Tune in to WHFR on Sunday, January 11th, from 4:00-7:00 EST, for the music of country blues singer, songwriter, and guitarist Mississippi John Hurt.
He was born on March 8th, 1893, in Teoc, Mississippi, to parents who were both slaves and continued to work on the plantation after the Civil War.
He taught himself to play at the age of nine, practicing guitar in the family home when nobody was around. John used the guitar of a friend of his mom, William Henry Carson, while he was courting a woman who lived nearby.
His syncopated playing style was ideal for dancing.
He passed away on November 2, 1966, at the age of 73.
