Upcoming Sunday Mysteries ~ June 4th

You know the voice if you’ve ever watched a Rocky & Bullwinkle cartoon or old enough to remember his role as a TV detective in Cannon or Jake and the Fatman. It's estimated, though, that he played some 7,500 roles in radio! That included narrator of the CBS series Escape and as Marshall Matt Dillon on radio's Gunsmoke...but that's not all! On WHFR's Sunday Night Mysteries, you'll hear Conrad arguing with the Director (in character) on CBS Radio Workship's "A Matter of Logic." You'll hear him introducing Ray Bradbury's "Mars is Heaven" and finally as part of a tense Suspense show, "The Man Who Threw Acid" from 1956.
Televison had already won the public over in the 1950s, but CBS Radio was still producing great radio drama. You'll hear it as always on Sunday 6/04/23 starting at 9PM ET on WHFR'S Sunday Night Mysteries. 89.3 in the Detroit area or whfr.fm on your streaming device.

All That Jazz

AllThatJazzAt WHFR, we are constantly getting new music. Some of our most recent adds are shared with us by our Jazz Music Director:

Artist: Sylvie Courvoisier & Cory Smythe
Album: The Rite of Spring
Label: Pyroclastic Record

Pianists Sylvie Courvoisier and Cory Smythe join forces for an interpretation of the monumental piece by composer Igor Stravinsky, The Rite of Spring. The two pianists here are known for their creative and boundary expanding forays on piano and take this classic piece of Stravinsky to new heights, including passages of free improvisation and extended techniques for piano.

Artist: Matt Mitchell
Album: Oblong Aplomb
Label: Out of Your Heads Records

On this two-cd set, pianist Matt Mitchell performs with a different drummer/percussionist on each cd. First up is Kate Gentile who joins Mitchell in a set of highly charged excursions into composed and improvised music. CD two finds Mitchell with longtime associate Ches Smith who plays not only drums but vibraphone, marimba and other percussion instruments.

Artist: Ingrid Laubrock
Album: The Last Quiet Place
Label: Pyroclastic Records

Ingrid has long been known as a creative force on tenor and soprano saxophones and has established herself as a brilliant composer in recent years. This set includes a string quartet of sorts, that being violin, cello, guitar and double bass. The music flows seamlessly from beautiful written passages to creative excursions into the avant-garde.

WHFR is happy to expand our library with submissions like the top jazz adds listed above. If you are interested in sending your music to WHFR, please click "Send Us Your New Music" to display all information needed to submit your content for airplay consideration. On behalf of WHFR, we thank you for supporting the station and helping us continue "Making Waves."

Hi, I am Anderson Coleman, producer and host of this long-running and thrilling broadcast, Blues With A Feeling. I am returning to WHFR on May 20, 2023, after a much too long absence. Listen to WHFR for many soulful voices and songs I play. These are rare sounds that many of you can relate to. During the Blues With A Feeling broadcast, I will capture the true essence of rare classic blues, R & B, and information about the music and the artists first heard here. These rare blues will attract and hold your attention from the moment you hear the first lyric. Many of you will be able to relate to the music from your own life experiences. Hear great old and new artists like Bobby Bland, B. B. King, Nina Simone, Professor Long Hair, and local artists like Alberta Adams, Kathy Hart and others.
I am back with an "emotionally charged dimension" to the word "Blues". I invite you to " lock it in" on 89.3 FM on Saturday night at 8:00 p.m.
This is the station and broadcast that has given you a choice in classic blues for over 17 years. It's too much to miss! Come and reconnect with me on The Station Making Waves, WHFR's blues in the nighttime.
